Supporting the University at Large

The Makerspaces at William & Mary support faculty and staff curricular, research, and ad-hoc educational efforts as well as myriad other requests. Over the past several years we have worked to help scientists engineer custom laboratory equipment, students construct award winning experimental systems, and teachers add modules to their educational curricula to provide world class opportunities for their students.

If you are faculty or staff looking to explore an idea, manufacture a piece of kit, or develop a new way to reach the minds of the Tribe; stop by the ISC4 Makerspace center (0302) to explore and reach out for a discussion with the director about how we could collaborate.

The Institute for Integrated Conservation teamed up with the Makerspaces to help students develop and deploy an ultra low cost water quality sensor in Madagascar in order to monitor reforestation efforts.
The award winning iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition team has collaborated with the makerspaces on several years projects.

A precision mouse treadmill and related mouse locomotion laboratory equipment (not shown) were custom made for neuroscience investigations in the Del Negro laboratory during the period of international travel restrictions due to COVID-19.

Students in the Schniepp Lab collaborated with the Makerspaces to design an open source syringe based biological 3D printer for use in studying diatom based biological materials.

Students from the Kidwell Lab in the chemistry department design and constructed a drone based air sampling payload for mapping environmental airborne conditions.

Due to the varied and changing landscape of higher education, and as we move into our new ISC4 home, The Makerspaces currently lack administrative funding for staffing.

We’re excited to continue the great work of the Makerspaces at William & Mary. If you are interested and able, consider supporting these efforts through a tax deductible donation to by entering in our specific fund identifier (6102) at Give.wm.edu prior to your generous support.
